why it’s important

College baseball programs deal with NCAA restrictions other sports don’t have.

Each DI baseball program is only allowed 11.7 scholarships for its roster of 35 players (27 scholarship players, 8 walk-ons). Baseball is the only NCAA sanctioned sport with a roster cap.

Some teams work around scholarship restrictions, while others can’t.

The sport continues to grow - revenue is up, television viewership and fan attendance are up - while most college players must fund their own cost of attendance. They must pay to play.

More education on the subject is needed. Steps must be taken to open college baseball to athletes who want to play, not just those who can afford it.
